Director's Statement

Inspired by true experiences, Grape Leaves was a passion project for me. Meeting Salem was kismet and from our early meetings together, we knew we had something very special. We connected right away and shared the same vision for this film. Through our similar experiences, we were able to bring to life a beautiful story. A story we hope will resonate with people and encourage them to think, while also breaking some stereotypes about Arab Americans. It was incredible to have our cast read the script and completely understand the film's purpose and how relevant it was on so many levels. On the last day of filming, we received word that the tragedy at Pulse Nightclub had occurred. Our hearts were heavy with the news and, we knew more than ever the importance of our film. I am so proud of this film and what we were able to accomplish with an exceptionally talented cast and crew. We strived to portray strong, Arab American women, which is why we decided to make Salma a Sociology professor and Rania a medical student. It was also our goal to have a female crew and, we were gladly able to accomplish that. This film is in memory of my father, Dr. Samir Najjar, who came over from Nazareth, Israel to America as a young man to fulfill his dream of becoming a doctor and helping others. It is also in memory of Emil T. Hadeed, Salem's father, and is dedicated to all Arab Americans who dream of a better life. I look forward to sharing our film and its powerful message to "Be willing" with the world.
